These four are in Canada, and they are here for the same reason as everything else on this site: a building worth describing and a clear reason to stand where it stands. The first occupies two pavilions built for a world exhibition and never taken down. The others sit above a gorge, on a river arm, and beside a lake. We describe the architecture, the rooms and the restaurants; we do not describe or assess the gaming floor.
Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.

Ile Notre-Dame, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Montreal Casino & Hotel
Two Expo 67 pavilions on an island in the St Lawrence, kept and reused whole
ARRIVING
The bridge to Ile Notre-Dame crosses open water, and the island is mostly park and racing circuit. The former French pavilion rises first: a tall, angular structure of aluminium and glass from 1967. The Quebec pavilion stands beside it. Both were built for a world exhibition and were never demolished afterwards.
THE EVENING
Levels stack inside the old pavilion, connected by escalators through a tall central space. The height of it is visible all at once. Restaurants occupy several floors, including a fine dining room, and live programmes run in the performance hall. Windows look back at the Montreal skyline across the water, which is what the glass was for.
THE NIGHT
Guest rooms are in the hotel building on the same site, quiet because the island carries no through traffic. Windows face either the water or the park. The architecture of 1967 does not reach into the bedrooms, which are plain and current. Outside, the river moves constantly and nothing else does.
THE MORNING
Ile Notre-Dame is a park before it is anything else, with rowing basins, gardens and the Gilles Villeneuve circuit used by cyclists. Old Montreal lies across the water. Daylight shows the pavilions clearly as exhibition architecture: repeated panels, sharp angles, and a shape meant to be read from a distance.
Coming and goingThe island is reached by metro to Jean-Drapeau and then a short walk or a shuttle, or by road across the bridge, and the walk is exposed in winter weather.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Fallsview Casino Resort
An early-2000s resort standing directly above the Niagara gorge, built into the slope
ARRIVING
Niagara Falls has two halves, and this one is the upper ridge above the gorge. The building steps down the hillside, so its true size is not obvious from the street. A glass entrance faces the falls road. Mist is visible from the approach on most days, drifting upward and then across.
THE EVENING
Dinner rooms face the water, and the falls are lit after dark, which changes the view every few minutes. A large theatre inside the resort brings touring performers. Corridors are wide and warm, built for crowds moving between the hotel, the restaurants and the parking structures. The sound of falling water is constant outside.
THE NIGHT
Rooms on the gorge side look straight at the Horseshoe Falls, and the higher floors see both cataracts. Interiors are conventional resort work: heavy curtains, deep carpet, large windows. Glass keeps almost all the noise out. When the lights on the water are switched off, the gorge becomes a black gap below the window.
THE MORNING
Spray hangs over the gorge early, before the crowds reach the promenade. Breakfast is indoors with the same view. The Niagara Parkway runs along the rim towards the whirlpool and the wine country beyond it. Seen in daylight, the resort is clearly a viewing platform with rooms attached to it.
Coming and goingToronto and Buffalo airports are the usual arrival points, with train and coach links to Niagara Falls, and the United States border crossing is close, so carry documents.

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
River Rock Casino Resort
A waterside resort on the Fraser River at Richmond, with its own marina beside it
ARRIVING
Richmond is flat, low and close to the airport, and the resort sits on an arm of the Fraser River. Boats are moored at the marina directly outside. The building is long rather than tall, with water on one side and the transit line on the other. Aircraft pass overhead at regular intervals.
THE EVENING
Restaurants along the river side keep the water in view, and the show theatre fills before performances. The resort works as a small district: hotel, spa, halls and parking connected under one roof. Vancouver's skyline and the North Shore mountains sit across the flats. River traffic continues long after dark.
THE NIGHT
Rooms in the tower look at the river, the marina or the mountains beyond, depending on the side. Furnishing is standard contemporary resort, with good glazing against the aircraft. Water is the constant element here, moving past at a steady rate. The spa and the pool are on a lower level.
THE MORNING
Fog is common on the river flats and burns off unevenly. Breakfast options sit inside the complex, and the dyke path outside is used by walkers and cyclists. Vancouver is reachable on the Canada Line from the station next door, and the airport lies in the other direction, equally close.
Coming and goingVancouver International is minutes away and the Canada Line stops at the resort, so a car is optional, and the dyke path connects onward on foot or by bicycle.

Rama, Ontario, Canada
Casino Rama Resort
A lakeside resort on Chippewas of Rama First Nation land beside Lake Couchiching
ARRIVING
The drive north from Toronto passes into cottage country, and the last stretch runs through the Rama reserve. The resort appears among trees rather than on a main road. Its design uses First Nation motifs at the entrance and through the public spaces. Lake Couchiching lies a short distance beyond the buildings.
THE EVENING
A large concert hall is the centre of the evening here, and touring acts fill it regularly. Restaurants range from formal rooms to counters. The site belongs to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and is operated on their land, which is stated openly throughout the building. Outside, the lake is dark and flat.
THE NIGHT
Hotel rooms sit in towers above the complex, looking over trees, water or the parking areas. The interiors are quiet and standard. Away from the highway, night sound is limited to wind in the pines. Orillia's lights are visible across the water from the higher floors on the western side.
THE MORNING
Golf, the lake and the trails around Orillia are the reason to be outdoors here. Breakfast is inside the resort. The Trent-Severn Waterway passes through Couchiching, so boats move between the lakes all season. Daylight shows how much forest surrounds the buildings, which is not obvious on arrival.
Coming and goingRama is north of Toronto and a car is the practical way in, coach services run to Orillia, and winter driving conditions apply on the last stretch of road.
